Commissioner Davis Property Tax Commission recommendations

Mesa County Commissioner Cody Davis recently provided an update following a meeting with the Commission on Property Tax. On Monday, Aug. 12, Commissioner Davis joined fellow commission members to discuss and recommend strategic actions to address the ongoing concerns over property taxes in Colorado.

During the meeting, the Commission proposed that the state legislature convene a special session to negotiate with Initiative 50 and Proposition 108 proponents. The goal of this negotiation would be to withdraw these measures, contingent on the willingness to amend Senate Bill 233. Such amendments aim to reduce property taxes further and adjust the caps to achieve a comprehensive statewide compromise.

"The majority of the Commission agreed that this recommendation is the best path forward to provide much-needed relief to property owners while ensuring a balanced approach across the state," said Mesa County Commissioner Cody Davis. "We anticipate that the governor will call for an executive session soon to begin these crucial negotiations."

Commissioner Davis emphasized that this recommendation reflects the Commission's commitment to finding a solution that addresses the concerns of property owners and upholds the fiscal stability of Colorado's communities. 

On Thursday, Aug. 15, Colorado Governor Jared Polis called state lawmakers to a special session on property taxes set to start Aug. 26.
